Hot (or Not) Wallets

Your casino needs funds ready when customers want to withdraw. But keeping more money within easy reach also means more could be exposed if the systems moving it are compromised.

That makes the amount you keep available for everyday payments a business decision worth getting right.

On 30 October, Binance reported approximately $6.3 billion in losses after its hot wallets were compromised. The exchange also temporarily suspended withdrawals while it reviewed and secured its systems. Its investigation was ongoing at the time of that update, but the operational consequence was already clear: a security incident can interrupt access to funds as well as put them at risk.

For a casino, the question is how to keep payments running without leaving more funds exposed than the business needs.

A hot wallet supports regular payments through systems connected to the internet. Cold storage keeps the keys needed to authorise transfers offline, reducing exposure to online attacks but adding steps when funds need to move. The balance between them affects both security and how readily your team can fund withdrawals.

There is no single percentage that suits every casino. The useful starting point is your own payment activity: how much customers withdraw, how sharply demand can rise and how long it takes to bring additional funds into use. An average day alone will not tell you what the casino needs during a busy evening or after a large win.

The reserve process matters just as much as the working balance. Money held separately can only support payments when the right people can release it through the agreed checks. If replenishment depends on someone who is unavailable over the weekend, a healthy reserve may still leave the payment team waiting.

Keeping additional funds in the payment wallet can ease that pressure, but increases the amount available through those systems. Holding less there requires a replenishment process that can respond when demand rises. Those decisions need to be considered together.

For operators entering crypto or reviewing an established offering, this is an opportunity to build a payment setup around the business they actually run: the withdrawals it needs to support, the funds it can expose and the controls required to move reserves.
